The best there is.

Marvel's Wolverine was the best-selling game in the US in September, according to Circana. Insomniac's PS5 exclusive launched September 15. It posted the biggest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 in February 2024 (VGC). That's good company, since Helldivers 2 went on to sell 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks. Circana's own summary says Wolverine "helped PlayStation claw big gains" for the month (Circana).

The hardware numbers reinforce that. PS5 dollar sales rose 43% compared with last September. That made it Sony's best hardware month since May 2025. Xbox Series dollar sales slipped 2% and Switch 2 fell 12%. Measured in units, Xbox hit what Circana called an "all-time September low." Worldwide, Ampere's data puts Wolverine at about 2.16 million units, second only to EA Sports FC 27 among PS5 games in September.

What else sold well in September?

Eight of September's top ten US sellers were new releases. Sports games took three of the ten spots, led by NBA 2K27 in second place. Here's the full list, in order:

  • Marvel's Wolverine
  • NBA 2K27
  • EA Sports FC 27
  • Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker
  • Wardogs
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword
  • Halloween: The Game
  • Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
  • Madden NFL 27

For the year so far, NBA 2K27 has passed Resident Evil Requiem as the best-selling game of 2026 in the US (VGC). Circana's charts have historically left out digital sales of Nintendo's own games, so Fire Emblem's spot may only reflect physical copies. The Blood of Dawnwalker, the first game from Rebel Wolves, a studio started by former Witcher 3 developers, landed in fifth.

It's a big win for Insomniac, which first revealed Wolverine back in September 2021 and then saw early footage leak in a 2023 ransomware attack on the studio. A launch like this is a reminder that a single huge exclusive can still move consoles. With GTA 6 arriving in November, the next couple of months are about to look very different on these charts. For now, though, September belonged to Logan (snikt).
