Fallout Shelter: The Experiment premieres on Prime Video on January 13, 2027. Amazon revealed the date and a first teaser today, which happens to be Fallout Day. The reality competition puts everyday people inside Vault-Tec shelters, and one winner walks out with $1 million (Nerdist).
When do the episodes come out?
The show has 10 episodes, and Prime Video is releasing them in three drops:
- January 13: Episodes 1 to 4
- January 20: Episodes 5 to 7
- January 27: Episodes 8 to 10
The teaser keeps it short and very on brand. Its tagline is "The world is ending. The competition is just beginning" (ComingSoon).
What is Fallout Shelter: The Experiment?
Prime Video calls it a show that "invites everyday participants to test their aptitude for the apocalypse." Contestants go through drills, psychological dilemmas and "morally challenging behavior trials" inside the vaults. Earlier reports said casting would lean on the game's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats, so expect challenges built around strength, charisma and the rest (we're hoping for a Luck round).
Who is making it?
Studio Lambert is producing it with Kilter Films. Studio Lambert is the team behind The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge, so it knows how to make a big reality competition. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who run the Fallout TV series, are executive producers, along with Bethesda's Todd Howard (GamesRadar).
How does it fit with the Fallout TV show?
It's a side project for fans to chew on while they wait. Seasons 1 and 2 of Fallout are streaming on Prime Video now, and Season 3 is filming. Kyle MacLachlan has hinted at a release around May or June of next year, so this show neatly fills the gap between seasons. Amazon first announced the series back in January, and Fallout Day was a pretty fitting moment to finally share the date.
My read is that this could be a lot of fun if it leans into Vault-Tec's evil streak. Almost every vault in the games was secretly an experiment, and the most memorable ones were pretty messed up, from the vault with one person and a crate of puppets to the one that voted on who to sacrifice every year. If the show gets even a little of that dark humor, it could work. If it's just The Traitors with Pip-Boys, it might wear thin (though we'd still watch the first episode).
