Assassin's Creed Reportedly Heads to Ancient Rome, and We Want a Toga
Nothing is true, everything is permitted, and apparently everything is Roman now.
Ubisoft is reportedly working on two unannounced Assassin's Creed games, and one of them could finally take the series to ancient Rome. French content creator J0nathan shared the claim on November 6, saying the big project is codenamed Mars and that two sources with access to Ubisoft's internal systems backed it up (KeenGamer).
Ubisoft hasn't announced or confirmed either game, so treat this as a rumor for now.
What is Assassin's Creed Codename Mars?
According to the leak, Mars is a mainline Assassin's Creed set in ancient Rome. That's about all we know right now, because the leaker said there aren't many more details yet (TheGamer).
Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson added a little weight to the report. He said his outlet had also heard the Mars codename, but it couldn't verify the rest of the claims to its usual standard (KeenGamer).
What is Assassin's Creed Pocket?
The second game, reportedly codenamed Pocket, is a smaller mobile title set in Jerusalem, the city from the very first Assassin's Creed. TheGamer says its gameplay sounds similar to Valhalla's Mastery Challenges, while its art style is reportedly closer to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Jerusalem was one of the main cities in Altaïr's original 2007 adventure, alongside Acre and Damascus, so this one would be a trip back to where it all started.
Hasn't Assassin's Creed already been to Rome?
Sort of. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood sent Ezio to Rome, but that was Renaissance Rome in the 1500s. Mars would be the first game in the series set in ancient Rome itself (TheGamer).
The timing is interesting, too. Netflix's live-action Assassin's Creed series is also set in ancient Rome, in 64 AD, the year of the Great Fire (Game Informer). There's no evidence the show and game are connected, but a game and a series sharing the same era would be a smart move for Ubisoft.
When could the Rome game come out?
There's no release window, and Ubisoft hasn't publicly acknowledged either codename. The company only confirmed in an October 29 update that more unrevealed projects are in development (KeenGamer).
My read is that Rome is the setting fans have been asking for since Origins and Odyssey proved the ancient world works so well for this series. Rome has emperors, senators, gladiators and plenty of backstabbing, which is basically the entire Assassin's Creed formula. If Mars is real, Ubisoft should announce it early and let the hype build. (Leap of faith off the Colosseum, please.)
