Spider-Man: Brand New Day Doubled Sales of Sony's Spider-Man Games
With great box office comes great game sales.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day was a giant hit in theaters, and it turns out the games got a big lift too. Sony told investors that after the movie came out, unit sales of its related Spider-Man games "approximately doubled," according to its latest earnings materials (Genki_JPN on X).
That means Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man games on PlayStation got a huge boost from Tom Holland swinging back into theaters this summer.
How well did Spider-Man: Brand New Day do?
Very well. The movie has made close to $2.5 billion worldwide, and it was a big reason Sony's second-quarter operating profit jumped 45% to 622 billion yen (The Irish Times). Sony also raised its profit forecast for the full year.
Sony's film revenue rose 48% compared with the same quarter last year, which shows how much one giant superhero hit can move a company this size.
Why would a movie boost the games?
It's a familiar pattern for big franchises. People see Spider-Man on the big screen, get excited about the character again, and look for more Spider-Man to play at home. Insomniac's games are the easiest answer, since there are three of them on PS5 (Marvel's Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2).
It's the same report where Sony said Marvel's Wolverine has sold 2.4 million copies, which we covered here. Insomniac is having a very good year.
Was everything good news for PlayStation?
Not quite. Sony sold 2.6 million PS5 consoles from July to September, down from 4 million in the same stretch last year (Cosmic Book News). Even so, the games business still grew, with revenue up 9% for the quarter while fewer new consoles sold.
What does this mean for Spider-Man fans?
My read is that Sony now has hard proof that the movies and games feed each other, which makes a new Insomniac Spider-Man game an easy business call. It also gives Sony every reason to keep Spider-Man in theaters and on PlayStation as long as it can. (Peter Parker still can't pay rent, but Sony's doing great.)
