Sony Pictures dropped a new trailer for Jumanji: Open World this morning, and the game has officially escaped from the box. The nearly three-minute look sets the last chapter of the trilogy at Christmas, with Jumanji breaking out of its console and spilling its chaos into the real world. It hits theaters on December 25 (BroadwayWorld).

Here's the new trailer from Sony Pictures.

What happens in the new Jumanji trailer?

The trailer opens on a snowy city during the holidays, and it doesn't stay calm for long. GamesRadar+ says the game lets prehistoric beasts loose in the streets, while the heroes have to beat a new villain inside Jumanji before time runs out, and this time there are no extra lives to fall back on (GamesRadar+).

Ruby spells out the stakes herself. "If we lose in here, there won't be a home to go back to. No reset. No second chance," she says in the trailer (SuperHeroHype).

Who is playing who this time?

This is easily the most entertaining part of the trailer, because the body swap gag is back and the avatars have completely different players. SuperHeroHype reports that Spencer's mom ends up inside Dr. Smolder Bravestone, while Spencer plays Ruby Roundhouse this time. GamesRadar+ adds that Spencer's young cousin and a local guy get pulled in too (Dwayne Johnson playing a worried mom is the casting we didn't know we needed).

Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan all return as the avatars, along with Nick Jonas as Seaplane. Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser'Darius Blain and Madison Iseman are back as the real-world friends, and Awkwafina and Danny DeVito return too (Wikipedia).

When does Jumanji: Open World come out?

It opens December 25, exclusively in theaters. Sony first dated it for December 11, then moved it two weeks to get out of the way of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, which both open December 18 (Wikipedia). Jake Kasdan directs again from a script he wrote with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, and filming wrapped in Los Angeles on March 30.

My read is that this is the right way to end the trilogy. Welcome to the Jungle worked because great actors played nervous teens stuck in movie star bodies, and The Next Level got its biggest laughs by handing those bodies to DeVito and Danny Glover. Swapping the players again gives Johnson and Black new characters to play without breaking what works, and a Christmas Day release makes it the easy family pick once Doomsday weekend is over.

If you want to catch up before Christmas, the three-movie set has the 1995 original plus both Kasdan movies.
