Borderlands 4 Gets Year 2 Content as Gearbox Plans the Series' Future

Borderlands 4 Gets Year 2 Content as Gearbox Plans the Series' Future

Borderlands 4 fans have been waiting for news on what comes after Year 1, and Gearbox finally gave it. In a note to fans, the studio said more Borderlands 4 content is coming next year, and it's also "taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole" (IGN).

What did Gearbox say about Borderlands 4 Year 2?

Gearbox said its Year 1 roadmap has officially wrapped up, and the studio promised that regular updates will keep going. "Moving forward, Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue," the studio said. "The team is cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year."

That's about all we know so far, because Gearbox didn't say what the new content will be, how much of it is coming or when it starts. For players who have been grinding the weekly activities since launch, any concrete roadmap would have been welcome, so a lot of fans will be watching the Gearbox Devcast for more details in the coming months.

What's next for the Borderlands series?

This is the more interesting part of the announcement, because Gearbox said the team is "exploring additional character arcs, storylines, and an exciting overall direction for the future of the franchise," and it wants fans to weigh in.

"Where can we take it next? What characters do you want to spend more time with? What stories deserve a payoff?" the studio asked, before pointing fans to social media and the Gearbox Devcast as the best places to share their ideas.

Don't expect a Borderlands 5 reveal anytime soon, though. "Big plans take time, and we need some room to work," Gearbox said, adding that it will "talk more when the time is right."

How is Borderlands 4 doing?

The series just passed 100 million units sold, but Borderlands 4 has had a bumpy first year. The game launched with serious PC performance problems, CEO Randy Pitchford responded directly to frustrated players on social media, and Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick admitted sales saw "a little bit of softness" because of the technical issues. The Nintendo Switch 2 version was also scrapped (IGN).

My read is that asking fans for input is a smart move after a rough launch. Borderlands has always lived on its characters, and longtime players have very strong opinions about who deserves more time in the spotlight. (Our vote is more Tiny Tina. Our second vote is also more Tiny Tina.)
