Clayface Wins the Box Office Weekend as Street Fighter Takes a 72% Hit
Clay beats Ryu. Somehow.
Clayface is officially the No. 1 movie in America after its first weekend, since DC Studios' body horror spinoff earned $24 million from 3,458 theaters, landing right on the number it was tracking for after Friday (ABC News). It added another $19 million internationally, bringing its global debut to approximately $43 million.
That's a genuinely encouraging result for a movie that reportedly cost $44 million to produce, especially since audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. We covered its Friday numbers here, and the weekend held up the way tracking suggested it would.
How close did You Can See Everything get?
Pretty close, actually. A24's You Can See Everything expanded from 855 locations to 2,655 in its second weekend and made $19.5 million, which is more than it made in its opening weekend. It's now at $45.1 million after two weekends on a reported $7 million budget (for the math fans, that's a very good ratio).
Industry analysts think it could become a legitimate awards contender, which means it may stay in theaters considerably longer than expected.
How did Wildwood open?
LAIKA's stop-motion movie Wildwood opened in third place with $11.8 million from 2,779 locations. That's more than double what LAIKA's last movie, Missing Link, made in its opening weekend back in 2019 ($5.9 million). Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore. The catch is its reported $100 million budget, so it'll need families to keep showing up consistently over the next several weekends.
What happened to Street Fighter?
It got hit hard, unfortunately. The Street Fighter movie made $8.6 million in its second weekend, a 72% drop from its opening (ABC News). It has made $46.9 million in North America so far on a budget of about $80 million.
A drop that steep usually means word of mouth isn't helping, and that's a tough spot for a video game movie that needed a long run. My read is that fans showed up on opening weekend, and the general audience never followed (it's a lot harder to win the second round).
What else made the top five?
Black Bear's Wicker opened in fifth place with $5.8 million from 1,471 theaters. The distributor acquired the movie at the Sundance Film Festival for $2.5 million, so it has already earned back that purchase price in a single weekend.
These are studio estimates, and the final domestic numbers are expected later on Monday.
