Gambit's New Avengers: Doomsday Accent Debuts in a Dunkin' Ad, Mon Ami

We finally know what Gambit sounds like in Avengers: Doomsday, and the reveal came from a donut chain. Channing Tatum's Remy LeBeau stars in a new Dunkin' commercial with H.E.R.B.I.E., the helpful robot from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it's our first real listen at his updated accent (Entertainment Weekly via Yahoo).

"Doomsday is here, mon ami," Gambit says to open the ad, before asking H.E.R.B.I.E. for ideas. The robot then explains the movie's multiverse problem, a collision of worlds called an "incursion." Dunkin' named the spot "Munchkin Incursion," which is honestly a great name for a donut ad.

Why is Gambit's accent different now?

When Tatum first played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, the thick Cajun accent was part of the joke, and half of his lines were nearly impossible to understand. That worked in an R-rated comedy, but Avengers: Doomsday is a much bigger and more serious story.

Tatum told Variety he wouldn't go "full Cajun" this time, because the Russo brothers want the humor balanced with drama. In the new ad, he's much easier to follow while still sounding like Gambit. His dad is from New Orleans, so he has said before that the accent is hard to pin down, since it covers a wide range.

What's in the Dunkin' Avengers promotion?

The tie-in includes Doomsday and Avenging Munchkins Donut Hole Treats, plus limited-edition collectibles. Dunkin' is also turning four of its shops into themed locations. A Fantastic Four restaurant opens in Los Angeles on November 17, an Avengers takeover hits New York City on November 18, and there will also be an X-Men shop in Chicago and a Doctor Doom takeover in Boston.

When does Avengers: Doomsday come out?

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, which is six weeks from today. Robert Downey Jr. plays Doctor Doom, and the movie brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men for the first time. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing.

The hype is already huge. The first full trailer pulled in 503 million views in its first 24 hours back in July, and trackers say worldwide presales have passed $125 million, though Disney hasn't confirmed that figure.

My read is that this is a smart way to test the new voice. Fans were split on how much they could understand Gambit last time, and a donut ad is a low-stakes place to let people get used to the change before the big movie. Pairing him with H.E.R.B.I.E. also teases the team-up energy Marvel is selling. (Gambit charging a donut hole with kinetic energy is the only sequel we need.)
